Check-out at a Johor Bahru homestay is usually 12:00 noon. If nobody is arriving the same day you can buy extra hours by the hour; if someone is arriving, the latest is 14:00. The door code is deleted roughly two hours after the stay ends, the deposit comes back in 1 to 14 days depending on how you paid, and if you are driving back to Singapore on a Sunday the Causeway is at its worst from 15:00 to 22:00 – so either leave before noon, or have dinner in JB and cross after 22:00.
Search "late check out JB homestay" and the first page is Agoda and Expedia hotel pages saying "check-out 12:00, late check-out charges apply, subject to availability". Nobody explains what actually happens that day: when the reminders come, how long the door still opens, what happens if you leave without tapping "Check out", and where three suitcases go when your bus or Causeway crossing is at 21:00. We manage over 100 homestay units in Johor Bahru and Desaru, and check-out day is the day the most "can we stay a bit longer?" messages arrive. Here is the full answer, hour by hour.
What time do I actually have to be out?
| Time | What happens | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Evening before, around 20:00 | WhatsApp reminder: tomorrow is check-out day, at what time | Decide now: leave at 12:00, or ask to extend |
| Check-out morning, around 09:00 | Second reminder, with a Check out button | Pack; open "Stay longer" in the portal if you need it |
| 30 minutes before check-out time | Warning: time past check-out is charged as late check-out | If you want to extend, ask now so you get a quote first |
| Check-out time (usually 12:00) | Your stay officially ends | Tap Check out in the portal or on WhatsApp |
| 15 minutes after | If you haven't tapped Check out: "we haven't seen your check-out yet" | Already gone? Tap Check out. Still inside? Choose Extend or Late check-out |
| About 2 hours after the stay ends | The system deletes your door code | Make sure everything is out before then |
Two things in that table matter. First, check-out does not happen by itself when the clock hits 12:00. Our system does not close a stay on a timer; it closes it when you (or our staff) tap Check out. If you shut the door and drive straight to the Causeway without tapping anything, your stay is still "open", and the time after 12:00 can be treated as late check-out until someone confirms you have really left. One tap avoids all of that.
Second, the 15 minutes is grace, not free extra time. Someone walking out of the door at 12:00 should not be chased at 12:00 – that is the only purpose. If at 12:15 you are still on the sofa with the bags open, you are in late check-out territory.
How long does the door code still work after 12:00?
The code you set yourself at check-in (how that works is in this article) does not die at 12:00:00 sharp. Our system clears expired codes in batches with a grace period of roughly two hours after the stay ends – so the guest who gets to the car and remembers the phone charger at 12:10 can still go back up.
Please read those two hours correctly, though:
- It is not a free late check-out until 14:00. Your stay ended at 12:00; the code stays alive only as a safety net.
- If you have tapped Check out and then pop back at 13:00 for something you left behind, that normally works. If the cleaner is already in, say hello and take your things.
- If you bought a late check-out or an extra night, "stay ends" moves to the new time and the two hours count from there.
- If you neither leave nor answer any message, the code is removed and we follow the guest-didn't-check-out procedure – but it very rarely gets that far.
Can I check out late? How much, and until when?
Yes, and the price is not "at our discretion". Our system gives one of three answers depending on the day:
| Your unit that day | Answer | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No arrival, you ask for a few hours | Hourly price, counted in whole hours from the standard check-out time | Ask for 12:30 → counted as 1 hour (12:00–13:00). Ask for 15:15 → 4 hours |
| Those hours already add up to a night's rate | We offer a full extra night instead of hours | Ask for 20:00 on a unit with a low nightly rate → a full night is better value, leave tomorrow at 12:00 |
| Someone is arriving the same day | Latest 14:00. Beyond that, refused | Ask for 15:00 → not possible, even if you are willing to pay |
An important note: on days with an arrival the system checks the time before it checks the price. So there is no "I'll pay more, give me until 16:00". The cleaner needs the gap between you and the next guest, and that gap cannot be bought. If even 14:00 leaves too little time to clean, that request is refused too.
The hourly rate differs per unit, so we do not print a number here – tap "Stay longer" in the portal and you see the real price for your date before you agree. Ask the evening before or that morning, not at 11:55: a little late still works, but 30 minutes before check-out time, the clock is already counting.
I can't extend, but my crossing is at night – where do the bags go?
This is the question we have to answer honestly: we do not offer luggage storage. There is no luggage room, no "leave it with the guard", and once the door code is deleted, a bag left in the unit is a bag in another guest's unit. The condominium guardhouse is not a left-luggage counter either – most building managements in JB do not allow it.
So your real options on a Sunday when you want to leave at 22:00:
| Option | Cost (third-party prices, October 2026) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Extend one full night | Your unit's nightly rate | Groups of 4 or more – one night split four ways is sometimes cheaper than 3 lockers + 2 Grab rides |
| Lockers at Komtar JBCC (opposite JB Sentral) | RM20 (small) / RM40 (medium) per 24 hours | Anyone leaving via JB Sentral or the Larkin buses, medium bags |
| Luggage storage at partner shops (Radical Storage and similar) | Roughly RM18–25 per bag per day | Big suitcases that don't fit a locker |
| Mall lockers (Mid Valley Southkey has paid lockers) | By size, pay on the spot | Anyone spending the whole afternoon in one mall |
| In the car | RM0 | Drivers – but don't leave valuables visible |
The prices above come from the operators' own pages and can change; check before you go. If you are a big group, do the sum first: three medium lockers are RM120, add Grab there and back, and you are sometimes close to one extra weekday night in a two-bedroom unit – and with the extra night you get a bathroom to shower in before you sit in the queue at the Causeway.
What do I have to do in the unit before leaving?
Our list is short, and it is what we actually ask for, not a 20-point list nobody follows:
- Tap Check out in the portal or on WhatsApp. This is the only step that is mandatory for every unit.
- For units with a physical key or access card: put it back where the unit guide shows, and send one or two photos – door locked, key back in place. The system only asks for these photos if your unit really needs them; if you are not asked, you don't have to.
- Make sure windows are closed and the door is properly locked when you pull it.
What we do not do: we do not fine you for unwashed dishes, rubbish not taken out or an unfolded blanket. Our cleaner comes in after you, and the standard cleaning is already in your price. The deposit is only deducted for damage and missing items with photos – not for "the unit was messy". We obviously appreciate the rubbish going out and the aircon going off, but that is courtesy, not a condition.
When does the deposit come back, and why is it slightly less?
The deposit (usually RM200) is refunded after a proper check-out – again, that is why the Check out button matters. The time we commit to depends on how you paid:
| How you paid the deposit | Refunded within |
|---|---|
| Touch 'n Go eWallet / GrabPay / ShopeePay | 1 day |
| FPX (online banking) | 7 days |
| Debit / credit card | up to 14 days |
Two honest notes. First, the payment processing fee is not refunded – if you paid RM206 including the gateway fee, RM200 comes back, not RM206. The exact figure is shown in your portal before you pay. Second, 14 days for cards is the maximum the banks need to show it on your statement; we release it earlier, but when it appears on your screen is not in our hands. If you want the deposit back fast, pay with an e-wallet.
If there is a deduction, you get photos and an itemised list. What we deduct and what we don't is in this article.
Driving back to Singapore on Sunday: what time should I leave the unit?
This is the part no hotel page has, but it decides whether your check-out day is calm or three hours in the car on the Causeway. The pattern reported by 2026 traffic guides and regular commuters is fairly consistent:
| Leaving JB (Sunday) | Causeway / Tuas | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Before 11:00 | Smoothest | Early check-out, breakfast in JB, go – the easiest |
| 11:00–15:00 | Building up | Still fine, but allow an hour or more |
| 15:00–22:00 | Red zone – the worst of the week | Avoid if you can; long weekends are worse |
| After 22:00 | Easing | Dinner in JB, cross late |
With that, plan your check-out day backwards:
- Leaving before 11:00? You don't need a late check-out at all. Pack the night before, tap Check out as you leave, reach the Causeway before it fills.
- Spending the afternoon in JB and crossing after 22:00? This is the day you need a luggage plan. Either buy one extra night (leave tomorrow morning, even smoother), or lockers at Komtar JBCC / Southkey and spend the afternoon there. An hourly late check-out will not solve this – the latest we can give on a day with an arrival is 14:00, and that is still eight hours before the Causeway eases.
- Taking the bus or the KTM Shuttle from JB Sentral? The Komtar JBCC lockers are right across the road – check out at 12:00, locker, Komtar / City Square, collect, board.
For the actual traffic on your day, use a Causeway traffic app or the live cameras – the pattern above is an average, not a forecast for your date.
The most common check-out day mistakes
- Leaving without tapping Check out. The stay stays open, the "haven't seen your check-out" message arrives while you are in the jam, and the deposit is slower because there is no proper check-out date.
- Asking to extend at 11:50. Possible, but you get the price and the warning at the same time. Ask the night before.
- Treating the two-hour code grace as a free late check-out. It isn't. The stay ends at 12:00.
- Leaving bags in the unit "just for a bit" after check-out. Cleaner comes in, new guest comes in, your bag becomes a three-party problem.
- Planning to leave for the Causeway at 17:00 on a Sunday with a 12:00 check-out and nowhere for the bags. Five hours in a mall with three suitcases is not a holiday.
If you want a smooth Causeway, book the right night
The simplest fix: if you know you want to go back late on Sunday, book through to Monday and leave Monday morning – smooth Causeway, no lockers, no clock-watching. On a direct booking with us the extra night has no platform fee, and we show the difference against Airbnb here. If you haven't picked an area yet, this article sorts JB by where you are actually going, and once you know the unit and dates, book direct here.
