The Agoda affiliate program in Malaysia has two doors: the Ambassador programme for creators with 3,000 followers, paying 4% capped at US$10 per booking, and a link-based affiliate route through partners, where published rates and cookie windows disagree. On a RM360 Johor Bahru weekend, expect roughly RM14 to RM22.
We should say where we stand. We run a homestay business in Johor Bahru and Desaru with more than 100 units, and we run our own referral program, so we have an interest here. We also do not run Agoda's program and cannot see inside it. Everything about Agoda below comes from Agoda's own page where one exists, and from named third parties where it does not, as read on 1 November 2026. Everything about our referral comes from how our system actually works.
Can you join the Agoda affiliate program from Malaysia?
Most likely yes, but there are two different programs, and many guides mix them up.
| Agoda Ambassador programme | Agoda affiliate route | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Travel creators on social media | People who send traffic with links or tools, directly or through a partner network such as Travelpayouts |
| Entry requirement | 3,000 followers on one platform (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, RedNote or X) | Approval; the audience requirement depends on the route |
| Countries | "Most countries around the world", some restrictions, list not published | Depends on the route |
| How the sale is tracked | Your own promo code | A tracking link |
| What your followers get | Up to 10% off, maximum US$100 | Nothing specific to you |
| Source | Agoda's Ambassador page | Partner pages, which differ |
Agoda launched the Ambassador programme in October 2025 and says it also comes with sponsored stays and monthly cash rewards for top performers. Agoda also asks Ambassadors to sign up as an Agoda Supplier, or payouts may be delayed. Agoda's page does not name Malaysia either way, so apply and read the reply rather than rely on any guide, including this one.
How much does Agoda really pay on a Johor Bahru stay?
For Ambassadors, Agoda publishes the number: 4% per booking for your first 99 bookings and 5% from booking 100 onward, on departed bookings, with a maximum of US$10 per booking.
The cap is the line most people miss. At 4%, you hit US$10 on a booking of US$250. Anything larger pays you the same US$10. So a long family stay or a big villa does not earn more than a mid-sized one.
For the link route, Travelpayouts lists 6% of the booking value without taxes, paid when the guest checks out, on accommodation only and not on flights. Here is what those rates look like, with our own referral on the same line. These are worked examples that assume the room costs the same everywhere, which it will not in real life.
| Stay | Ambassador at 4% | Link route at 6% (Travelpayouts) | Our referral at 5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 weekend nights, RM360 | RM14.40 | RM21.60 | RM17 (first booking, after RM20 off), RM18 after that |
| 3 nights, family unit, RM750 | RM30 | RM45 | RM36.50, RM37.50 after that |
| 4 nights, RM1,000 | RM40, close to the cap | RM60 | RM49, RM50 after that |
Read that table honestly: 5% is not the highest rate on it. If a partner route really gives you 6% and your audience books through your link, Agoda pays you more per ringgit than we do. Our full earnings breakdown shows the same maths in more detail.
Why do websites disagree on Agoda's commission and cookie window?
Because they describe different routes at different times, and most are not Agoda. Here is what we found on one afternoon.
| Source | Commission stated | Cookie window stated |
|---|---|---|
| Agoda Ambassador page | 4%, then 5%, max US$10 | Not relevant, it uses a code |
| Travelpayouts offer page | 6% | 1 day, last click |
| Ecomobi comparison, October 2025 | 4.8% | 1 day |
| Track360 teardown, June 2026 | About 4% to 7%, by volume | "Often around 30 days" |
A one-day window and a thirty-day window are not a small difference. Travel is a slow decision. A family sees your post on Friday, discusses it over dinner, and books next Tuesday. With a one-day window that sale is not yours, and with thirty days it is. Do not plan around any of these numbers until you have read the agreement for your own route.
This is why a code matters more than the percentage for small audiences. A typed code does not expire when the browser forgets you, and that is true of Agoda's Ambassador code and of ours.
What about Booking.com, Trip.com and Airbnb?
Short answers, with the same warning on sources.
| Platform | What the official page says | What third parties say |
|---|---|---|
| Booking.com | Free to join, register through CJ; no rate or window published on the page | Ecomobi lists 3% and 2 days in one article, and "up to 4.8%" in another |
| Trip.com | "Up to 7%" across the program; no hotel rate on the page | Ecomobi lists up to 8% on hotels, with 7 days for hotels |
| Airbnb | Help page: the Associates program ended on 31 March 2021 | CNBC reported the closure at the time; we found no open program to join today |
Our earlier comparison of Shopee, Klook and Trip.com for people without a website covers the marketplace side, including who should not bother at all.
How does our homestay referral work behind the screen?
Since we can only speak for one system from the inside, here is ours, step by step.
- Every account gets one code. Any guest or owner with a free portal account has one fixed six-character code and a link. No follower count, no application.
- A click is recorded for that browser. When someone opens your link, we save it. If that browser pays for a direct booking within 7 days, the booking is stamped with your code. The last link clicked wins.
- A typed code beats the click. If your friend types your code at checkout, that is proof on its own, and it overrides any click. So a phone-to-laptop switch or a slow decision does not lose the sale. Your friend must be signed in, and the code has its own rules: RM20 off once per account, room price of at least RM150.
- The commission is frozen on a record. One row per booking: who earns, how much, on what amount. It is 5% of the room price the guest paid, never of cleaning or deposit.
- It stays "waiting" until check-in day. Cancelled bookings and no-shows pay nothing. Eight common reasons a referral does not count are listed separately.
- You withdraw from RM50. One open request at a time. It goes from requested to approved to paid, or rejected with a reason. The withdrawal steps are here.
Your Refer & earn page also shows clicks and distinct visitors, which tells you whether people opened your message at all. How to share the link explains how to read those numbers.
Where is our referral weaker than Agoda?
These are the limits you should weigh before choosing us.
| Point | Agoda | Our referral |
|---|---|---|
| What you can sell | Hotels and homes across many countries | Only units on our direct booking page, in Johor Bahru and Desaru |
| Discount for your followers | Up to 10%, max US$100, on the Ambassador code | RM20 once per account |
| Bookings on platforms | Earns on Agoda bookings only | A friend who books the same unit on Airbnb or Agoda earns you nothing from us |
| Attribution reliability | Not something we can judge | Best effort: the booking never fails because of it, but if it fails, commission is not added back automatically |
| Payout speed | Monthly, per Agoda's page | Reviewed by hand, and we do not promise a number of days |
On a RM360 stay, "up to 10%" could be worth more to your follower than our RM20. If your followers travel all over Asia, Agoda is simply the bigger shelf, and we would not pretend otherwise.
Which one should you choose?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 or more followers who travel widely | Agoda Ambassador | Any destination, and a code that does not depend on a cookie |
| A travel website with steady readers | Link route through a partner | Tools suit a site, but read the window first |
| A WhatsApp or office group that visits JB a few times a year | Our referral | No follower minimum, and a typed code survives a slow decision |
| Under 3,000 followers but your content is about JB or Desaru | Our referral | You cannot enter the Ambassador door yet, and your audience is already looking here |
| No audience at all | None of them | Commission needs people to send; it is not a job |
The programs do not cancel each other out as far as our side goes: nothing in how our referral works stops you holding an Agoda code as well. Check Agoda's agreement for its side of that.
Whichever you use, commission is income. Our note on referral commission and tax in Malaysia explains which records to keep. That is general information, not tax advice.
If your phone has people who come to JB or Desaru, our Refer & earn page shows you where to find your code and how the numbers work.
