You can earn from affiliate links in Malaysia with no website at all: Shopee, Klook and Trip.com all accept a social account or even a WhatsApp group as your "channel", and a homestay referral program like ours needs nothing but a six-letter code. The difference is in how much each one pays per share, how long your link stays valid, and how many ringgit you must collect before you can withdraw. For someone whose audience is twenty friends rather than twenty thousand followers, the maths is very different from what the "best affiliate programs" lists tell you.
Those lists are written for content creators. They rank programs by headline commission and ignore the three things that decide whether a normal person ever sees a payout: the size of the typical order, the cookie window, and the minimum withdrawal. This article walks through all three, with our own program included so you can see where it is weaker as well as stronger.
Do you really need a website to do affiliate marketing in Malaysia?
No. Every program below lets you apply with a social media account, and some do not ask for an audience at all.
| Program | What you need to join | Where the link is usually shared |
|---|---|---|
| Shopee Affiliate | Shopee account plus a social profile (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Telegram or similar) | TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram |
| Klook Affiliate | Application via Klook's partner site or an affiliate network; social accounts accepted | Travel content, group chats |
| Trip.com Affiliate | Application via Trip.com's partner site or networks such as Awin; social accepted | Travel content, group chats |
| Antlerzone Refer & earn | A free guest account on our portal; the code is issued automatically | WhatsApp, Telegram, family groups |
The real barrier is not the sign-up. It is that most of these programs pay cents on the kind of order your friends actually place. A WhatsApp group of colleagues who cross the Causeway on weekends is a perfectly good audience, but only if the product they buy is big enough for a percentage to matter.
How much does each program pay on a typical order?
Commission rates change often and differ by category, so treat the figures below as the order of magnitude, not a quote. They are the publicly listed rates on the programs' own pages and on the affiliate networks that carry them, as of 2026.
| Program | Typical commission | Typical order from a friend | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopee Affiliate (Malaysia) | Low single-digit percent, with a per-order cap of a few ringgit on most categories | RM40 to RM80 basket | Usually under RM3 |
| Klook Affiliate | Around 5% on attractions, mid single digits on tours and hotels | RM150 LEGOLAND tickets for a family | RM7 to RM10 |
| Trip.com Affiliate | Around 5% to 6% on hotels, far less on flights and trains | RM400 two-night hotel | RM20 to RM24 |
| Antlerzone Refer & earn | 5% of the room rate paid, direct bookings only | RM300 to RM700 weekend stay | RM15 to RM35 |
Two things stand out. First, the e-commerce programs cap you by the ticket size: a 10% rate on a RM30 phone case is RM3, and Shopee's per-order cap means even a big basket rarely pays more than a cup of coffee. Second, travel is where the ringgit are, because a single booking is in the hundreds. On that measure a homestay referral sits next to the Trip.com hotel rate, with one difference that matters a lot for small audiences: the room is a whole-apartment stay for a family, so the base amount tends to be higher than a single hotel room.
We will not pretend the 5% is special on its own. What makes it worth more to a small circle is the next two sections.
How long does your link stay valid, and what is "last click wins"?
Every program attaches your link to the visitor's browser for a fixed number of days. If the person buys inside that window, you are paid. If they buy after it, you are not, even though they came because of you.
| Program | Attribution window | Last click wins? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopee Affiliate | 7 days is the figure most Malaysian guides quote; some campaigns differ | Yes |
| Klook Affiliate | 30 days for most products, 7 days for hotels | Yes |
| Trip.com Affiliate | 30 days on the website, 7 days in the app | Yes |
| Antlerzone Refer & earn | 7 days, same as Shopee by deliberate choice | Yes |
"Last click wins" means that if your friend clicks your link, then clicks someone else's link for the same shop before paying, the other person gets the commission. In a WhatsApp group where three people share Shopee links, this happens constantly and nobody notices. It is one of the main reasons people with small audiences earn almost nothing from marketplace programs.
Our window is short, 7 days, and we are honest that this is a limit. But we have one fallback the marketplace programs do not: your friend can type your code at checkout instead of clicking a link. That counts as proof on its own. So if they saw your message on a phone three weeks ago and finally book on a laptop, the referral still works. For a travel decision that families talk about for weeks, that fallback is often what saves the commission.
How much must you collect before you can withdraw?
This is the figure that silently kills most casual affiliates. A RM3 Shopee commission is real money on a dashboard, but if the program needs you to reach a threshold first, a person with ten friends may never get there.
| Program | Minimum withdrawal | Paid how |
|---|---|---|
| Shopee Affiliate | Shopee pays out automatically on its own cycle once the commission is validated; thresholds and timing are set in the app | ShopeePay or bank, per the program's schedule |
| Klook / Trip.com (via networks) | Depends on the network; commonly a USD or MYR threshold in the tens to hundreds | Bank transfer or PayPal on the network's monthly cycle |
| Antlerzone Refer & earn | RM50 of confirmed, not-yet-withdrawn commission | Bank transfer in the same monthly batch we use to pay owners |
At RM50, two or three weekend stays by friends get you to a withdrawal. At Shopee's per-order figures you would need dozens of validated orders to reach a comparable amount, and the validation itself waits for the return window to close.
To be fair to the other side: if your friends are students buying phone accessories every week, Shopee is the only program on this list where those purchases pay you anything at all. The right program is the one that matches what your circle already buys.
Which program fits which kind of person?
| If your audience is… | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok or Instagram followers who buy on impulse | Shopee Affiliate | Volume compensates for the tiny per-order amount |
| A travel-content page with monthly readers | Klook plus Trip.com | 30-day windows suit people who research before buying |
| A family or office WhatsApp group that visits JB or Desaru a few times a year | Antlerzone Refer & earn | One stay pays more than a month of marketplace clicks, and the code-at-checkout fallback suits slow decisions |
| Someone with no audience at all | Honestly, none of them | Affiliate income needs people to send; it is not a job |
Note that the fourth row applies to us too. If you do not know anyone who stays in JB or Desaru, our program will earn you nothing, and we would rather say that than have you expect otherwise.
What are the rules that make a homestay referral not count?
Because the sums per booking are larger, the rules are stricter than a marketplace's, and you should know them before you start. Our full earnings breakdown is in Refer a friend to a Johor Bahru homestay: how much can you actually earn?; here is the short list.
- Direct bookings only. If your friend reads your message and then books the same unit on Airbnb or Agoda, there is no referral. Those platforms do not tell us who sent the guest.
- No self-referral. If the person paying is the owner of the code, nobody earns.
- The click or the typed code is the proof. A link that was never opened does not count, however many times you sent it.
- Commission is confirmed on check-in day, not on payment day. A cancellation or a no-show pays RM0. Until check-in it shows as waiting.
- One code per booking. Your friend's RM20 first-booking discount and your 5% travel on the same code; a separate promo code cannot be stacked on top.
- Never exchanged for cash. The RM20 is a discount on the room, not a transfer.

Is this taxable income?
Commission you earn from any affiliate program, ours included, is income. In Malaysia the Inland Revenue Board treats affiliate earnings as taxable income once they are more than occasional. We are not tax advisers; if your affiliate earnings become more than pocket money, speak to one. This article is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Affiliate marketing without a website is real, but for most Malaysians it only becomes worth the effort when the thing being bought costs hundreds of ringgit and the people buying it are already in your phone. If your phone has people who visit JB, our Refer & earn page explains how to get your code and start.
