How far is Desaru from JB? About 74 to 79 km by road, depending on where you start. On the Senai–Desaru Expressway (E22) the drive takes 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic. The car toll one way is RM9.90 from Ulu Tiram, RM7.20 from Cahaya Baru, or RM13.50 from Senai.

That is the short answer. But "77 km, a bit over an hour" doesn't tell you which toll gate to enter, why two families leaving JB on the same morning can pay different tolls, or why so many people reach Desaru with an almost empty tank. This guide is for families who have already decided to go to Desaru and now want to plan the drive. If you are still deciding whether to sleep in JB or in Desaru, read our cost comparison of a JB day trip versus staying in Desaru first.

How far is Desaru from Johor Bahru, really?

The Senai–Desaru Expressway itself is 77 km long, from Senai in the west to Desaru. Nobody drives it end to end, though. Your real distance depends on where you start and finish:

FromToRoad distance (approx.)Time in normal traffic
JB Sentral / city centreDesaru Coastabout 74 kmabout 1 hour
JB customs (CIQ, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar)Desaruabout 78 kmabout 1 hour 5 minutes
Johor Bahru cityHotels at Desaru Coast—about 1 hour 15 minutes
Senai AirportDesaru Coastabout 80 kmabout 1 hour

These figures come from online route planners (Rome2Rio, TravelProfy) and the "getting here" page of Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast. They are normal-traffic times, not school-holiday Sunday afternoon times. The Causeway Link express bus from JB Sentral to Desaru Coast takes about 90 minutes because it stops at Larkin; the listed fare is RM15, but published timetables differ between sources, so check with Causeway Link directly before you plan your day around it.

Which route from JB to Desaru: expressway or the old Kota Tinggi road?

There are two ways, and for almost every family the answer is simple.

Senai–Desaru Expressway (E22). The route nearly everyone uses. It is tolled, straighter, and crosses the Johor River on a 1.7 km bridge. This is what gives you the "just over an hour".

The old road through Kota Tinggi. Before the expressway opened, the drive to Desaru through Kota Tinggi took more than 2 hours on narrow roads. No toll, but you pay in time. It only makes sense if you actually want to stop in Kota Tinggi (waterfalls, food) on the way.

On the E22 itself, the real question is where you get on. There are three main entries for people coming from the JB area:

  • Ulu Tiram – the usual one if you start from Tebrau, Mount Austin, Setia Indah, or the city centre via Jalan Tebrau.
  • Cahaya Baru – via the Pasir Gudang side; suits you if you are staying in Masai, Pasir Gudang or Permas.
  • Senai – if you are coming from the airport, Skudai, or straight off the Second Link from Tuas. The Senai main interchange connects to the Second Link Expressway, so cars from Tuas can join the E22 without going through the city.

How much is the toll from JB to Desaru?

The E22 is a closed toll system: you pay by entry and exit point, not a flat fee. Payment is by Touch 'n Go or SmartTAG only, no cash. For Desaru, your exit is Penawar.

Enter atExit atClass 1 (car)Class 2 (van, small lorry)
Ulu TiramPenawarRM9.90RM14.90
Cahaya BaruPenawarRM7.20RM10.80
SenaiPenawarRM13.50RM20.20

The government announced in December 2025 that Senai–Desaru Expressway tolls would not go up in 2026, so these rates still apply this year. A return trip from Ulu Tiram is RM19.80; from Cahaya Baru, RM14.40.

Why is Cahaya Baru cheaper? Because you drive a shorter stretch of the expressway, not because of any discount. If your home or homestay is in Tebrau, driving across to Pasir Gudang just to save RM2.70 isn't worth it: the extra city-road time and fuel eat the saving.

One thing for Singapore cars: the same Touch 'n Go card you use for the road charge at the Causeway also pays the E22 toll. Make sure it has enough balance for the return trip before you get on the expressway; there are no cash lanes. We wrote the full checklist for Singapore cars (VEP, RFID, the RM20 road charge, the ¾ tank rule) in our guide to driving a Singapore car into JB.

How much is petrol from JB to Desaru and back?

The return trip is about 150 km. A typical family car uses roughly 7 litres per 100 km, so about 11 litres. Fuel prices for the week of 22 to 28 October 2026:

Who is drivingFuelPrice per litreFuel, return (±11 litres)Toll, return (Ulu Tiram)Total
Malaysian car, BUDI95-eligibleSubsidised RON95RM1.99±RM22RM19.80±RM42
Malaysian car, unsubsidisedRON95RM4.32±RM48RM19.80±RM68
Singapore carRON97 onlyRM4.80±RM53RM19.80±RM73

The 7 litres per 100 km is an assumption; a big MPV with seven people will use more. Fuel prices are set weekly, so the real numbers will move a little. The point: driving to Desaru costs roughly RM40 to RM75 return. It shouldn't decide whether you go.

Where can you refuel and stop on the way to Desaru?

This is the part many people miss. Along the whole expressway there is only one rest area: the Layang R&R, with a Shell station, around kilometre 30, serving both directions. After that the road runs through plantations and river country until you exit at Penawar.

So:

  1. Fill up before you get on the expressway, especially Singapore cars that must use RON97.
  2. If small children need the toilet, Layang R&R is the last chance before Desaru. Don't wait for "we're almost there".
  3. Coming back from Desaru at night, the expressway is dark and quiet. Leave with enough fuel, not "we'll fill up on the way".

When should you leave so you don't get stuck?

We don't have hour-by-hour traffic data for this expressway, so we won't invent a "best time". What we can give you is sensible rules and what is happening on the road right now.

There are roadworks. The 9.34 km stretch from the Sungai Johor Bridge to Sungai Semenchu is being widened and is expected to finish around April 2027; in January 2026 the government approved another RM117 million for the next 4 km, from the bridge to Cahaya Baru. While the works continue, expect slow-downs in the work zones, especially on long weekends.

The rules we suggest to our guests:

Your planSuggested departureWhy
Entering Adventure Waterpark at 10:00Leave JB before 08:30An hour-plus drive + parking + ticket queue
Day trip to the beach / fruit farmAfter breakfast, around 09:00 to 10:00These aren't tied to an opening time
Driving back to JB on Sunday afternoonLeave Desaru before 15:00, or wait until after dinnerEveryone heads back at the same time on Sunday afternoon
Going straight back to Singapore on SundayAllow 1 hour 15 minutes to the Causeway plus the immigration queueThe Sunday-afternoon Causeway queue is often longer than the drive from Desaru
Public or school holidaysAdd at least 30 minutes to every time aboveDesaru is at its busiest those weeks

Before you leave, open Google Maps or Waze for live traffic. That beats any table in any article.

If you are crossing back to Singapore the same day, plan your check-out day carefully: we cover luggage, late check-out and when to leave for the Causeway in our check-out day guide. For Singapore and Malaysian school holiday dates, see our when-to-book calendar.

No car: how do you get to Desaru from JB?

  • Causeway Link bus (JB Sentral – Desaru Coast): about 90 minutes, listed fare RM15. Buses are infrequent, so your day runs on the bus timetable.
  • Grab or taxi: easiest to get there, hardest to get back. In the evening, rides from Desaru to JB are not easy to find, so have a plan for the return before you go.
  • Ferry from Singapore: Tanah Merah to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal takes about 1.5 hours. That is for families going straight from Singapore to Desaru, not from JB.

If you don't have a car, that is a strong reason either to stay in Desaru itself, or to stay in JB and skip Desaru this time.

Checklist before you drive to Desaru

  1. Touch 'n Go with at least RM30 balance (return toll plus a margin). Singapore cars: add the road charge and VEP.
  2. Full tank before you get on the expressway. There is only one R&R on the route.
  3. Pick your entry based on where you are staying: Tebrau/city → Ulu Tiram; Pasir Gudang/Permas → Cahaya Baru; Skudai/Tuas → Senai.
  4. Check traffic on Google Maps or Waze before you leave, especially on long weekends.
  5. Plan the way back, not just the way there. Sunday afternoon is the busiest time, both to JB and to the Causeway.

Stay in JB or in Desaru?

We manage short-stay units in central Johor Bahru and in Desaru, so we have no reason to push you either way. The honest answer: a drive of just over an hour means Desaru works as a day trip from JB, as long as your plan there isn't a full waterpark day with small children. If it is a waterpark day, one night in Desaru is usually more comfortable than 2.5 hours in the car on the same day.

Toll, fuel and fare figures above are what we checked in October 2026 and can change; travel times are normal-traffic estimates, not promises.
